Gold Helmet Award
BOSTON, Mass. - November 14, 2007 -- Senior Springfield College quarterback Chris Shapre has been awarded this weeks Gold Helmet Award by the New England College Football Writers. Chris, a four time Helmet winner, piled up 276 yards and three touchdowns on the ground and threw for two more scores and a career-high 166 yards in Springfield's 54-42 season-ending victory over Norwich University on Saturday, November 10, 2007.
The Gold Helmet Award is presented weekly by the Boston Globe and the New England Football Writers Association to two individuals from New England football-playing colleges – one from Division I and the other from Division II/III – who excelled on the field. The presentation was made in the Hall of History at Harvard University Wednesday afternoon. Springfield Head Coach Mike DeLong was on hand to make the presentation to Chris.
Chris, the 2006 Melberger Award winner, wrapped up his stellar career against the Norwich Cadets last Saturday. Chris finished his season with 1,360 yards rushing on the season, the second-highest single-season rushing figure in Springfield history. The only mark higher was Sharpe’s figure of 1,941 yards rushing in 2006 (also a New England Division III record). Chris’s 1,360 yards this season were 8th best in New England Division III history.
Chris finished his college career with 5,723 yards of total offense, which simply extended his Springfield College career record. With his three rushing TDs Saturday, Chris finished with 432 total career points, extending his own SC record in that category, and second-best in New England Division III history. On the year, Sharpe finished with 21 TDs rushing (tied for 4th nationally in TDs) and a personal single-season best five TDs passing.
