BABSON PARK, Mass. – The Springfield College men’s lacrosse team took over sole possession of first place in the Pilgrim League with an 11-5 victory over host Babson College at MacDowell Field on Saturday night. With the victory, the Pride improved to 7-5 overall and 5-0 in the conference, while Babson fell to 5-8 overall and 4-1 in the Pilgrim League.

Junior captain Tyler Montgomery (Brunswick, Maine) led all players with three goals for Springfield, while classmate Jake Beebe (Sudbury, Mass.) added two goals and five assists for a game-high seven points. Junior Ryan Thibodeau (Somers, Conn.) also scored twice for the Pride, and junior Tom Albano (Ridgewood, N.J.) finished with seven saves in net.

Babson was led by senior co-captain Jason Wellemeyer (Pembroke, Mass.), who scored two goals in his final regular season home game. Junior Matt Enright (Bristol, R.I.) added one goal and two assists, and junior co-captain Bryan Wilbur (Hingham, Mass.) and first-year Andrew Packer (Hudson, Ohio) each chipped in with a goal. Rookie Mike Saucier (Nashua, N.H.) played the entire 60 minutes in net for the Beavers, finishing with 14 saves.

Springfield jumped out to an early 4-1 lead, but Wilbur struck with just over a minute left in the opening quarter to cut the Beavers’ deficit to 4-2. Enright then assisted Wellemeyer before adding a goal of his own midway through the second, tying the contest at 4-4. However, the Pride netted three unanswered goals in the final five minutes to lead 7-4 at the half and then limited Babson to just one score in the final two quarters as the visitors came away with the 11-5 victory.

Now armed with a tie-break advantage over both Lasell (4-1 Pilgrim League) and Babson, Springfield essentially has a two-game lead in the conference standings. The Pride close out their regular season league play with games against Norwich and MIT next week, along with a non-conference tilt with local rival WNEC in between. Babson will hit the road for its final two games, traveling to Newton for a key matchup with Lasell on Wednesday and then finishing up at Wheaton on Saturday. [Info from Springfield Web site]
