CAMBRIDGE, Mass

April 26, 2008 - Springfield College tallied eight unanswered goals through the opening 23 minutes en route to a 15-4 victory over MIT in a Pilgrim Lacrosse League game on Saturday.

In their season finale, the Engineers (4-9, 2-5 Pilgrim) were led by Dan Piemont’s three goals. Ryan Thibodeau posted a game-high four goals for the Pride (8-6, 6-0 Pilgrim), which will be the No. 1 seed in next week’s Pilgrim League Championship Tournament.

Joe Heney put Springfield on the board after 48 seconds expired, connecting on a pass from Jake Beebe. Thibodeau extended the Pride’s lead less than four minutes later before Tyler Montgomery recorded back-to-back strikes during the final five minutes of the frame.

Springfield found the back of the net three times during the first three minutes of the second quarter. Jake Jones sparked the run, followed by Joe Macchi and Chris McMaster. Thibodeau tallied the Pride’s last goal of the period to make the score 8-0 at the 7:46 mark. MIT ended the shutout with 2:19 remaining in the half when Ryan Ballentine intercepted a pass at midfield and found Piemont for the goal.

Kyle Louer’s solo effort following the opening faceoff of the third quarter increased the Pride’s lead to 9-1. The Engineers narrowed the gap on another Piemont strike that was set up by Dylan Roden. Louer countered with an unassisted goal midway through the period as Thibodeau scored two minutes later.

In the final frame, Austin Orsini converted a feed from McMaster inside the first minute to raise Springfield’s advantage to 12-2. Piemont completed the hat-trick when he swatted in the rebound of a save right in front of the net. Thibodeau, Joe Femia, and Sean Runyon each contributed to a 3-0 spurt for the Pride that spanned three minutes. Eric Zuk recorded the final goal of the day with 26 seconds on the clock.

Roden and Mark Spadafora each picked up three groundballs while Samuel Jasinski collected eight saves in net for MIT.

Chris Jez and Evan Buss paced Springfield with three groundballs apiece. In net, Tom Albano made four saves during the first half while Matt Cipolla closed out the game with three stops.
