SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - April 25, 2008 - The 16th ranked Western New England men’s lacrosse team held the host Springfield College Pride without a goal for the final 33:36 of the game as it went on for a 12-4 victory in non-conference action.

With the win, the Golden Bears improve to 10-4, while the Pride drop to 7-6.

The WNEC defense held the Pride’s two leading scorers, Jake Beebe (Sudbury, Mass.) and Tyler Montgomery (Brunwick, Maine), without a point in the contest. Entering the game, the duo had combined for 77 points this year.

Mike Kelly opened up the scoring at the 10:59 mark of the opening period as he found the back of the cage for the first of his game-high five goals in the contest. Just under three minutes later, Springfield tied the game at one after Joe Macchi (Mahopac, N.Y.) dodged to his left and hit the bottom right corner of the net.

WNEC then jumped ahead 2-1 after Bryan Cofrin buried a jump shot after coming from behind the cage with 5:36 left in the first stanza. Body Savoie gave the Golden Bears a two-goal advantage, after he finished a transition opportunity as the Pride were called was offside. The Pride tallied the final goal of the first half as Greg Welch (Peabody, Mass.) spun off his defender and ripped his shot off the post and into the back of the cage.

Just five seconds into the second period, Kyle Louer (Islip, N.Y.) took a hit as he finished a shot on the doorstep to knot the contest at three all. Over the next 11:19, WNEC rattled off three unanswered goals, including a man-up tally from Kelly and a man-down goal from Jared Pabis, to grab a 6-3 lead. Jake Jones (Amherst, Mass.) netted Springfield’s final goal of the game with 3:36 remaining in the first half after his shot from 10 yards out found the top corner of the cage.

Kelly cleaned up a scramble in front of the cage for his third goal of the first half with just two seconds remaining as the Golden Bears went into halftime with a 7-4 lead.

In a much slower paced second half, the Bears held the Pride off the scoreboard and netted five unanswered goals en route to the 12-4 victory.

Springfield outshot the visitors, 34-26, in the game. Kyle Gable (Somers, Conn.) finished with a team-best two points off a pair of first half assists. Tom Albano (Ridgewood, N.J.) made nine saves in goal, while Chris Sharpe (Derry, N.H.) scooped up seven ground balls and caused a pair of turnovers in the loss.

Kelly paced WNEC with five goals and an assist, while seven different players registered a goal in the win. Travis Brown went 12 of 19 from the face-off “X”, while Matt McAnney picked up a game-high nine ground balls.

Springfield returns to action tomorrow afternoon when it travels for its final regular season game at MIT. Face-off is slated for 1:00 pm.
